Fallen ‘Sparrow’ lifts students’ sights

Graduation is an exciting time, but for one group of seniors at Forest Grove High School, looking back is a bittersweet experience. As Don Kunkel’s Community 101 class wrapped up for the year, the person foremost in the students’thoughts was Frankie Jiminez of Woodburn, an 8-month old boy who died in late April due to chronicpneumanitis and other severe medical problems.

Sparrow Club effort helps kids to learn the joy of helping others

Tricia Johnson, the students at St. Monica School on Mercer Island are heroes. Johnson, the development director at the small Catholic school, brags about how the students have banded together this year, raising money for a 13-year-old Auburn girl with cancer.

Shelley Hennig, Miss Teen USA 2004, Rides High with Sparrow Clubs USA
Shelley shares her sash and crown with sparrow Carryn at the Luke Mezich Memorial Team Ropin', an annual event hosted by board president Steve Mezich to support Sparrow Clubs USA in honor of his son, Luke. Shelley has been a phenomenal teen spokesperson for Sparrow Clubs this year. As a senior, she also started a club at Destrehan High School near New Orleans for their 2 yr old sparrow named Michael.

2005 Moriah McNeil Memorial Celebrity Golf Classic a Big Success
(Left-to-Right) Big Dane of "Pimp My Ride" is pictured with Sparrow Clubs USA director Jeff Leeland and ex NY Jet Emanuel McNeil (1990), who hosted the second annual golf event in Richmond VA in honor of his daughter Moriah who was adopted as our first "sparrow" in San Antonio in 2002. Event proceeds will sponsor up to five new sparrows from Baltimore to Richmond VA this year.

RE/MAX Offices of Central Oregon Raise $100,000 for Sparrow Clubs
The weekend of April 28th and 29th was a huge success for Sparrow Clubs after the RE/MAX offices of Central Oregon presented a check to Jeff Leeland, the founder and executive director of the youth charity organization, for a whopping $100,000! The Kleenex came out when Jeff Leeland introduced a very special guest, Sami Dulley, who nervously welcomed the crowd. Sami was one of the first Central Oregon Sparrows. She was adopted by High Desert Middle School.
